Lose 2 BBQ!
The 2025 Lose 2 BBQ is coming up on Saturday June 7th, 2025 at 10 AM, so get your teams registered early (psst, there is an upcharge if you wait too long).
Our annual summer tournament is a coed volleyball social. We will play volleyball all day and have a grill out afterwards. The Sands will provide the grill, plates, plasticware and a couple side dishes.
We have all coed divisions for Rec (6s – $180), Intermediate (6s -$180) and Power (4s – $120). There cannot be more guys then girls on any team. Along with your paid registration, you will receive a Meat Voucher (about a week before the tournament). You can take this voucher to Fareway meat counter on Grand Ave and select your meats to grill.
We will not be providing lunch so you will need to be prepared. Bring a cooler if you want but no outside alcohol is allowed. Sands will be serving alcohol starting at 11am.

Lose 2 Then BBQ has coed divisions – 6s (3 guys, 3 girls) for Rec and Intermediate players as well as a POWER 4s division (2 guys, 2 girls). Pool play begins at 10 in the morning with a double elimination tournament to follow; the grill will fire up at 4pm. Prizes will be awarded to the first place team in each division!
Stay and eat! All teams attending this social volleyball tournament receive a voucher for meat to grill at the end of your play. For the meat, the teams that are paid in full will receive a “Meat Voucher” (within a week of the tournament) from DMCVC to use at the Fareway store meat counter (just two blocks from Sands, on Grand Ave) – up to $20 of whatever you want. You can pick up your meat ahead of time or that morning. We will keep your meat in the cooler for grillin’ at the Sands after the tournament. Sands provides the plates, silverware and a couple of sides! (Be sure to pick up your own buns if your meat requires it!)

FAQ
TOURNAMENT INFO
- When do things start?
- For 2025, you can arrive at 9:30 AM to start warming up. Captains meeting is at 9:45 am. Then you should be warmed up and on your court to serve starting at 10 am.
- Pool play
- 1 game to 25, win by 2, cap at 27
- Break to eat in between pool and bracket play
- Tournament play
- This is double elimination (hence the “Lose2” in Lose2BBQ) so when you lose the first time, you will go to the losers bracket and continue playing until you lose again. Then you are out.
- Starting out for tournament play, you will play 2 games to 25, no cap (if you split, then you will play one more game to 15, no cap).
- After your first loss, you will move to the loser’s bracket and it’s one game to 25, no cap.
- Head to the grill around 5 PM once you have lost your second game in tournament play
WEATHER
- Does it get cancelled due to weather?
- We will play if it’s just raining. Sands management will determine if there is a lightning threat and then they will instruct us not to play
- What if it’s hot and I’m melting?
- Drink lots of fluids. Take a break if you need it!
- Can I bring a shade tent?
- Yes. There are grass areas you can set up in. There are also umbrellas over some tables and a shaded pergola area, but seating in those areas is limited.
VOLLEYBALL RULES
- Generally it’s sand rules but read on for some key differences and reminders
- No more than 3 guys on the court at once
- The lineup/server should alternate between guy and girl
- There is NO coed girl rule (so a girl does NOT have to touch the ball before it goes back over)
- No back row attackers – you cannot come to the front and then be a hitter. (But you can block as a back row player)
- Call your own double contacts, but it’s pretty laid back. Not as tightly called as if there was a ref
FOOD & DRINK
- What food is available?
- Your team will need to bring your own lunch, snacks and any non-alcoholic beverages. For supper, you should go to Fareway ahead of time and get any meats with your voucher. Bring that to the tournament and we’ll put it in the fridge. You can grill it after you are done playing, around 5 pm or later. (Don’t forget to grab buns and sides to go with your entrees!)
- Do I need grilling supplies?
- No, there are grilling utensils and charcoal all provided. You can bring plates to transport your food to and from the grill if you want (no glass please)
- You may need to bring your favorite condiment or spices. Sands will only have ketchup and mustard
- How do I get the Fareway meat voucher for my team?
- It will be emailed to your team captain at least two days in advance so reach out if they don’t get it.
- Can I bring alcohol?
- No (per the law, not our policy). Sands will start serving alcohol from the bar around 11 AM
